Cowardly Lion Wig (and fleece costume)
Cowardly Lion Wig (and fleece costume)
This wig was made by me from 2 costume wigs, several wig extensions and macrame yarn wefted into a full headpiece, with attached ‘beard’. It was made for a production of the Wizard of Oz that was cancelled due to Covid. The curls are treated and stiffened to be hearty enough for middle schoolers, so it will last for many performances without fraying (with proper care by a responsible actor, of course). The chin section is soft elastic for a nice fit.
The materials alone were over $100. It took many, many hours just to make the wig, then the hair had to be curled, which took days. The curls are stiff and made to last (assuming a careful, responsible actor). The matching ears are attached but could be removed if the wig is used with another suit.
The suit is polar fleece in a very basic style with a long back zipper for quick change. The tail is attached very well and includes a small piece of Velcro to attach at the hip for practicality in certain scenes. The elastic topped boots are permanently attached to a pair of ladies’ flats. The mittens have elastic wrists. The heavy rug yarn will not fray and is sewn on securely. The Courage badge is simple ribbon and metallic vinyl fabric, nothing fancy. It’s on Velcro that blends into the suit.
The wig will fit a student or adult. The suit is size Med to Large for an actor approx. 5’ tall but is easily altered. The shoes are approx size 8 (Ladies).
